"It's my special ability. Look." Ember holds open her hand, and a bright orange flame, like a candle, appears above the palm of her hand. "Do you have a special ability?"

The kid thinks for a moment then conjures an answer. "I can fold my eyelids back. Wanna' see?" He then reaches for his eyelids and starts folding them back. "I heard of this one man that can do this and squirt milt out his tear spot." He tries a couple of times before Ember has a chance to counter.

Ember's fist closes and she turns away as the kid starts trying to fold his eyelids. "No, in fact. I'd rather not." She starts decisively concentrating on the fork.

The head of the fork melts to yellow, and the whole thing is soon a round lump in Ember's hands. She carefully keeps anyone (especially the kids!) from getting close enough to touch it.

While that exchange is going on, Tony asks a question. "So, how did you get those strange names, anyway?"

"Most of them are a joke or a negative personality traits. Take Pope for example, while we were in the army he would never shut up about his religion that and his name Peo. And Abubakar seems to always to be five seconds too late to spot ambushes, so we call him fish face in honor of Admiral Akbar."
Ceffer chuckles menacingly.

Pope cuts off Ceffer's evil laugh, "Fishface surrre has a story behind his name. Our Platoon was marching through a river when he tripped over a sunken log. Three units didn't notice him trip and toppled over on top of him. Lucky for him, they were able to dismantle the dog pile before he finished drowning. When we dragged his sorry little aaaImean ankles out of the water, he started coughing up water and left his mouth gaping like a fish out of water."

The kid visiting with Ember leaves.

You certainly turned on your language in last few years. You sure you don't mean face or rear either one of those would be better than ankles. A lot better story than that the time you tried to exorcise that shadow guy nearly got the whole Platoon killed because of your bullheadedness and belief in vampires. Be glad it wasn't a real vampire you have gotten us all killed. Centurion and Roman here we're the only ones who stayed at their posts and has even put a dent in that thing. Come to think of it they're the reason I realize that fire would actually work on it.

Tony stands up and starts pacing a little.

"Besides harboring werewolves, what else did this base do?"

"Obviously genetic research." By now, Ember has poured a cup from the cooler, and put in a tea bag. The cup starts steaming as she sits down at the long table. "Sit down."

"You don't need antimatter genetic research. What bugs me this is probably only scratching the tip of the iceberg they have gravity labs, forcefield, antimatter, they're getting rid of their werewolves, and I don't have a clue what's going on. It seems like they're gearing up for War of the Worlds but they're getting rid of their top super soldiers."

Pope and Fishface set the table as the two remaining families arrive. Fishface has a wife and a five year old son, and Roman has a three year old daughter and a rather round wife.

Pope answers Tony's question while the other two greet their families. "After the base was abandoned, those of us who were left began to compare notes. The genetic aspect was mostly confined to the werewolf research. About half the base or so was dedicated to less abstracted, "cover" projects. We were on a project relating to the attempt at understanding the nature of super-powers. Word has circulated about "an experimental power source" found running underneath the bomb shelters."

"Why do you have bomb shelters?" Ember takes a sip of tea. "Unless these guys really were expecting world war three, but I would have thought one well placed A-bomb could undermine whatever you've got as a bomb shelter."

"This town was first build during the cold war, a time when the US and the Russia, then called the Soviet Union, were honestly expecting World War III to start with only hours if not only minuets warning. As for abandoning the werewolf project, the circulated word says they came up with some other sort of breakthrough elsewhere before the werewolf genome could be perfected. Other than that, it's just speculation."

Pope finishes with the table and everybody is sitting down. "Shall we say prayer for the food?"

Pope says the prayer. He prays for a blessing for our group and the town in the times to come. The noise from the kids having fun prevents further meaningful conversation. We return to Wells Hills after we are done.
