The Voyage begins

The Captain orders the ship leave as soon as he came aboard the Harogia. He sold the Gems and made a Deal with Aheia the Goddess of miscellaneous fortune. He nearly filled his cargo with sensors to take to the Elves. A Dwarf Researcher joined the crew and offered to assist in modifying the communication array to be more efficient as they travel to Elven Space.

Ratha stepped off the wooden stool as it sank back into the floor, and admired the elaborate pattern on the ceiling. She'd just finished carving the holes, and now sat down and patted a half foot-high mushroom on the cap. The mushroom blushed blue and blinked. Ratha pointed upwards. "Look, Oenel. Twenty new powerstone pockets, each one at least one-hundred eighty two point nine centimeters from any other. Now if only those sloppy humans hadn't gotten the Heartwood so askew! Any juvenile can tell a three degree difference between the alignment of a symmetrical assembly and their trapezoidal door." She sits down on a sudden chair and begins to strum a stringed instrument. The sound softly penetrates nearby areas.

Ms Ratha of the... I am not going to use your whole name. So Ms. Ratha I would appreciate it if you would spend a little more time in sickbay and not talk to ambulatory rot. We have four doctors on board and we all must take turns monitoring the medical equipment. You know the stuff that is part of life support? The things keeping us alive? Anyway please get down there and take your turn I was assured that you were medically trained that is why we did not get any more doctors."
Head Doctor Litwhack has some how found the shortest point between the her "room" and the outside. His irritation is standard before he gets his insulin in the morning. And this thing about rotations Ratha had never seen him at the medical station. Nor did she understand why someone would design medical to control life support that was the heartwood's job.
His voice carries through the wood at the volume that one would associate with screaming or an alert but the tone of his voice seemed slightly tiny and as if he was carrying on a normal conversation.
*******Meanwhile********
Deep in the communication array.
"Oy we need! bide hang oan. we cannae use th' arc a body mebbe thes crabgrass detectur will wark."
Dett Yells while trying to coordinate the Elf mage and the Dwarf who has very little idea about how various theoretically incompatible technologies can work together. It is slow going and look like the long communicators array will not be online for a while.

The soft music stops. A moment later, there is a small BANG! as Ratha appears in front of Dr. Litwhack. An instrument that looks like a small guitar or a ukulele is strapped to her back. In one hand is a standard issue cup from which she is sipping, and in the other she is holding open a notebook. There is a pen floating above the notebook, poised and ready to take notes.

Ratha takes one quiet sip from her tea. "Dr. Litwhack, I understand you are the chief medical officer aboard this vessel." The pen animates and begins scribbling in High Elf gibberish. "Is it common for humans to harass their underlings nine point six minutes before every shift?" As she finishes her question, the pen pauses, then re-orients itself as if writing from the Doctor's side of the book.

"No... but when then fail to take into account the slight difference in Gal-standard vs Terran time and slowly start coming in later and later to the point that they are almost 12 minute late... It becomes becomes incumbent on me to inform them of their error no matter how mystical and creepifying they can be. Also it help if you are slightly early so that the other Doctors can go over with you what happened on their shift and decrease their stress over having to possibly pull a double shift. In the Future could you please arrive 5-10 minutes early, it would be greatly appreciated. For the record your cute ambulatory rot is welcome in the Med bay as long as it stays out of the access tunnels."
He salutes and walks back up the passage heading toward one of Laboratories with two Enlightened scanners in his hands. As he walks he has a slight dance to his steps and is humming a slight folk tune.

Ratha smiles and nods before he leaves. She looks at the pen. "Note to self: Educate the humans as to the practicality of Galactic Standard Time, at least to keep a reference of it on hand in the event we happen upon people more time sensitive than I. In the mean time, get a human time piece." Ratha closes her book and the pen automatically falls into its slot in the binding. She calls forth the ukulele and continues playing on her way to the medical bay, sipping her tea between lyrical verses.

Dann is lost in thought as he tinkers away at the sensor array with the crew assigned to upgrading it.

"Oy Without this we can't get the news or border crossing alerts. So until we get this fixed no dosing off."
Dett Nudges Dann

"Well if ye be needing the rest room don't just stand there. Go. Don't get lost in though about it! No use holdin' it in if it distracts ya' from ya' duties. We don' hav yar lifespan elf."
Dett respond caustically as he works with Darvin to get the electrical components working.
"If ya wait it'l cause problems down the road.l"

As Ratha enters Sickbay, the woman doctor on duty gives her an electronic glare and clocks out.

The sickbay is small and primitive; knives, and needles are everywhere. There are two nurses on duty, both monitoring the environmental equipment at this time. Ratha's job is to continue familiarizing herself with the equipment by running endless tests and simulations. She gets right to it; using the ugly human microscope to analyze a bacteria colony situated in a mundane human sample dish.

The microscope is clumsy at best, malicious at worst. All the knobs and levers all seemed to serve one purpose; to confound the optic nerve. Oh bother! Ratha hums for a second and withdraws the colony from the microscope, staring at it with her naked eye and seeing it much clearer than with that clumsy human device. In a tenth of the time it would have taken her with using the microscope, she identifies the bacteria and catalogs it, then moves onto the next dish... and the next one...

"Mam? We have computers for that. Here let me show you."
Nurse McLee hooks monitor up to the microscope and taps a button the bacteria comes in a false color pictures. It is labeled and identified. It seems like a strange form a magic.

It might look like magic, but Ratha knows it's not. And if it were magic, whoever created the infernal contraption really botched it. Ratha holds up the next dish. "This is faster, easier, and requires fewer mental resources. But thank you for your concern, Nurse." She continues doing it her way.

"The computer records it so that in the case that we all die horribly, Any human vessel can learn from our mistake and piece together a history of what happened."
MCLee explains patiently carefully guiding her back to the machine.
"I used to get into trouble because I relied on behavior characteristics instead of my eyes. What is funny is that I was more accurate without the machine, but they wanted to have a record in case anything happened.
Why do I keep having to explain these things to elves!"
He mutters under his breath.
"Is Mog upset with me or something."

Ratha does some muttering herself (in high elf) and carries on, using the spell to check the computer's work.

"Ms. Rat'a Could you explain what those words mean?"
The Low alto of Maria voice interrupts Ratha's stream of words. In her hand is a Tablet which she is keeping notes.

*****Meanwhile*****
"Well think about this now We are deaf until we get this fixed!"
Dett gestures toward the disassembled communications array.

"Of course. It would be a good idea to cobble something together before we leave warp." Dann continues work with a little less distraction displayed.

"There is no accurate translation. Literally, it might say, 'The barks of your heritage is unusually colored and thinks it is a gopher.'" Ratha looks at the nurses to see if they realize just how gravely she insulted them. Otherwise her face is emotionless. It occurs to her that the woman with the notes could be trying to write a translator from elf to human, which would be especially interesting if she was assuming elves only spoke one language, that being what was on the captain's brain card. "As I said, it is meaningless in your tong. Let us continue with work."

"I see. Thank you for the translation. but I must ask, is it usual for Elves to insult a Subordinate who instructs you in the proper procedures?"
Maria replies with a smirk Her attitude is smug like [a fox that just raided the henhouse]. Her baring is eerily similar to of many of the novice Social climbers back home. While her attack was similar to them it lacked some of the grace but there were hints of it.

My my, aren't we awfully cocky today? Ratha narrows her eyes at the human, silently. Then her book floats up and poises to take notes. Ratha begins to speak, quickly, and in High Elf. "Dear Father, the humans are so far as you expected; industrious (laborious), clean (sterile), uniform (colorless), quiet (without song), informed (eavesdropping), perfumed (pungent), and articulate (rude). It truly is a miracle they weren't gobbled up by the Drow the minute they found the Realverse." The book closes. Ratha switches to English. "Thank you, Miss Mara for thine insights. We should all be about our business now, yes?" Ratha smiles charmingly, then returns to her work.

She smiles sweetly as the next person comes in for their psych Evaluation. Ratha gets a slightly unnerving feeling about that smile. She hmms an Old Elven Tune as she leaves.

"Any Idea when the com-net will be working again?" Captain Outis ask's able to hid most of his impatience and frustration.
